Many of the top veterinary schools in the country such as Colorado State University and Washington State University are preparing their students not just for a career as a veterinarian, but also for real life. It is sad in today’s day and age that we do not prepare our students as well as we should for their real world practice of medicine as well as for all the new technology that is out there in the medical field. Not only is this the case in the veterinary field, but also in radiology. It is extremely important for students to be prepared for what is out there to embrace the new technology that comes their way.
One of the ways that veterinary schools prepare students for the real world is by allowing them to gain knowledge on subjects that will help them in their careers and their lives. Many feel that vets take care of sick animals and that is the extent of their job but this is not even close to being the case. They are constantly making sure that the food that our pets consume is safe, studying the bond between humans and animals, as well as providing medical care and medicine to all animals in need. Therefore, the veterinarian will be prepared for any type of animal or pet emergency. These universities also make sure that their students are pursuing the career of their choice because becoming a veterinarian is not an easy task!
In all aspects of the medical industry there is a variety of new technologies that we must embrace. Professionals such as radiologists must learn to manage new technology and make it a part of their daily routines. Radiologists are primarily used to using film based radiology to provide for their patients. However, the medical field is leaning more towards using a new filmless technology which can be difficult veteran radiologists to grasp. This is called digital radiography and uses sensors instead of traditional film.
The primary reason for the switch is the cost. It is much less expensive to go digital than to endure the financial burden of the many steps it takes to complete the film radiation process. While many radiologists have a difficult time getting used to it, they do realize the benefits to using it. The professional is able to see the image immediately and uses less radiation. This is beneficial to dentists and other medical professionals as well because the faster you can see the image, the faster you can diagnose.
As mentioned, the medical field has a broad spectrum of opportunities which all require preparation for the real world as well as adaptation to new and up and coming technologies. All of which help professionals from radiologists to veterinarians to perform their jobs adequately.
